They are already part of our lives, and they are expected to change the society in the future.
Robots are not only increasingly present these days, but some consider they will make notorious changes in our lives, from the way we work, to transportation and care for dependent people.
Lately, robots are more and more present in the headlines. Their participation in the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Winter Games, in which robots are also hitting the slopes in a ski race is an example of this, and these sort of competitions are propitious to develop technology.
However, some images have caught the attention worldwide. The images, shown in a video of the company Boston Dynamics, are an example of how far robotic has come nowadays.
The video shows the new invention of the company Boston Dynamic (one of the most expert companies in this field): robots that move like animals, open doors and that are able to cooperate and interact with other robots.
History of robots
A robot is a mechanism able to move and function by itself. The name comes from a Czech play called Robots Universales Rossum, published in 1920 by Karel Capek, a Czech author. The success of the play led the word robot (in Czech: forced job) to its popularization.
The history of robotic is unbelievable long. The first machine considered as the first robot ever built (a machine that replicated the movements and shape of a living being) was created by a greek mathematician called Archyras in the IV century B.C.E. It was a mechanic pigeon propelled by steam.
However, the modern era of robots began in the middle of the 20th century. The first digitally controlled robot was built in 1954 and was called Unimate. It was used in the automotive industry to lift and stack metal pieces.
Robots in our daily life
Although we may be not very aware of it, the use of robots has been spread in many scopes. Using robots with self control of movement as part of our daily activities and house work was considered to be too far from the reality or even science fiction. The truth is that nowadays robot vacuums clean the floors of many houses without even being noticed.
In addition, we are used to see drones overflying our heads. They have been used in the military industry for decades, but are currently being involved in more peaceful purposes such as filming and aerial photography.
In the industry field, robots have been used for many years. It is common the use of impressive robot-arms that work hand in hand with operators in the assembly lines of car plants.
Robots in the future
Many experts agree with the opinion that humans will closely live with robots in their houses, hospitals and factories.
In fact, many believe that some professions and jobs carried out by people, such as store-keeping, office jobs, telephone selling, shipping and transportation will disappear.
Currently, researchers are focused on developing robots that are able to learn from their own experience, collaborate with people and even understand human feelings.
At the end of the day, technology has not been that far yet, although amazing advances have already been made. But even the most sophisticated robots may fail in the most inappropriate sceneries.
